The Ministry of Regional Development and Local Government of the Republic of Latvia is the leading state administrative institution in the field of planning and coordination of state and regional development, local government development, spatial planning, state investment and land policy, as well as e-government , information society and information technology area.
The Ministry of Regional Development and Local Government ensures the coordination of state development planning process by elaboration of unitary long-term and middle-term state development trends – Sustainable Development Strategy of Latvia and National Development Plan.
The main targets of the Ministry are:
- coordination of state and regional development policy in conformity with Sustainable Development Strategy of Latvia and National Development Plan, thus providing implementation of unified state development planning system;
- supervision of regional development policy implementation by creation of efficient implementation mechanism, promoting balanced regional development of Latvia;
- promotion of capacitated development of municipalities, availability of good quality public services in whole Latvia and involvement of people in development of local territories, as well as monitoring of municipalities work in conformity with assignment defined by law;
- elaboration and provision of implementation of state policy in e-government, information society and information technology areas;
- promotion of state and municipal electronic services.
The main directions of activities of the Ministry are:
- participation in state development, land policy, regional policy and spatial planning policy development;
- coordination and implementation supervision of regional policy and spatial planning policy;
- supervision of implementation of assignments defined by law in municipality working area, guidance of municipalities' development and implementation of municipalities' reform;
- organisation and implementation coordination of laws and other normative acts in regional policy, spatial planning policy and municipality working and development areas;
- coordination of cooperation between state administration and municipal institutions in development of electronic services;
- organisation and implementation coordination of information technologies in state administration in order to provide efficiency and modernisation of state administration;
- provision of attraction of investments in e-government, information society and information technology areas;
- supervision of state information system in Latvia.
Under the supervision of the Ministry of Regional Development and Local Government there is the State Regional Development Agency. The aim of the Agency is to implement well-balanced state development support policy by providing implementation of national, European Union and other financial instruments, required research work and good quality services.
